Memorial to Honor Worcester County Service Men and Women Who Died in Korea

Worcester, Mass., May 3, 2002 - The Korean War Memorial of Central Massachusetts today received $100,000 from the Commonwealth to build a Korean War Memorial in Worcester that will honor the 189 Service Men and Women from Worcester County who died in Korea. In presenting the check to General Chairman of the Korean War Memorial Committee Francis R. Carroll, Massachusetts Veterans' Services Commissioner and Medal of Honor recipient Thomas G. Kelley, USN (Ret.) was joined by members of the Central Massachusetts Legislative Caucus who were instrumental in securing the funds. State Senator Guy W. Glodis and Representative John J. Binienda were scheduled to speak at the breakfast and check presentation ceremony at the Worcester Club.

The funding, appropriated in the 2002 State Budget, was the result of a bill filed last year by Caucus members, including Glodis and Binienda, and Caucus co-chairs, Senator Harriette L. Chandler and Representative John P. Fresolo.

During the ceremony, Worcester Mayor Timothy P. Murray, City Manager Thomas R. Hoover, City Councillors, and City and State officials joined with members of the Korean War Memorial Committee in announcing tentative plans for a groundbreaking at the Washington Square site later this year. The City Council unanimously adopted an order designating the preferred site for the Memorial on March 26, 2002.

According to General Chairman Carroll, the goal of the Korean War Memorial of Central Massachusetts is to build the Memorial in 2003, which marks the 50th Anniversary of the end of the Korean War.
